This time, that\u2019s it\u2026 With nearly four months\u2019 delay<\/strong> compared to the original schedule, I have finally arrived in Kigali<\/strong> to meet the last Constellation group<\/strong>.
(A reminder: Constellation is a cultural NGO bringing together several painting-awareness groups around the world.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All that remains now is to reach their village: Nyakabanda<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apparently it\u2019s not very far, and the directions given by Alphonse<\/strong>, the local coordinator, are simple and clear: go to Gitarama<\/strong>, then from there take a motorcycle taxi<\/strong> to Nyakabanda<\/strong>. He will be waiting for me at COFORWA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gitarama<\/strong> is only about 40 to 45 kilometers from Kigali<\/strong>, and minibuses run there regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nyakabanda, on the other hand, I couldn\u2019t find on the map. Probably a small village somewhere nearby. It shouldn\u2019t be much of a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is just one detail bothering me: Alphonse wrote that the motorcycle ride costs 5,000 Rwandan francs<\/strong>, about 10 dollars<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A fortune here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But well\u2026 probably a typing mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I set off. The weather is beautiful and I have the whole day ahead of me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And without any difficulty I reach Gitarama<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bus stops in the middle of a large dirt square<\/strong>. A few steps away, several motorcycle drivers are waiting for customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I walk up to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Nyakabanda?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer comes back as a burst of laughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The muzungu wants to go to Nyakabanda!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within seconds the news spreads across the square. Everyone is laughing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One man, apparently incredulous, asks me to repeat:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Nyakabanda? Are you sure?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Yes, yes\u2026 Nyakabanda! At COFORWA<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Five thousand francs.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The amount is huge. To come from Kigali by minibus I paid 600 francs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that is exactly what Alphonse told me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I agree, somewhat doubtful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man straps my backpack onto the luggage rack and we set off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ten meters later a kid comes running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He fills the oil tank<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We start again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fifty meters farther, another stop: this time the fuel tank<\/strong> needs filling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discussion between the pump attendant and the driver is lively. The only words I catch are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nyakabanda.<\/strong>
and Muzungu.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the tanks are full, we finally leave\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only to stop again five hundred meters later<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The driver disappears into a house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alone on the motorcycle, I wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What has he gone to do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He did say something to me, but it was in Kinyarwanda<\/strong>, and my knowledge of that language is extremely limited \u2014 practically nonexistent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually he comes back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This time wearing a thick jacket<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Damn\u2026 where the hell is<\/strong> Nyakabanda?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But now, at last, we really set off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very quickly the road begins to wind through the mountains. The scenery is magnificent and, if I didn\u2019t hate being a passenger on a motorcycle so much, I would probably enjoy the ride immensely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But right now I\u2019m mostly looking forward to arriving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So it is with relief that, after about forty minutes<\/strong>, I see a sign:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nyakabanda<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

No distance indicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But since we are leaving the paved road, I assume it cannot be very far now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not very far\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just 25 kilometers of muddy mountain track<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just one more hour<\/strong> clinging to the back of this damned motorcycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My GPS tells me that as the crow flies I\u2019m only 43 kilometers from Kigali<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yet I have the strange feeling that I\u2019ve reached the edge of the world<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All that remains now is to find COFORWA<\/strong>\u2026 and Alphonse<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stage 3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, Gitarama<\/strong> was about 90 kilometers from Kigali<\/strong>, not 45 as I had written at the time. The town changed its name in 2006<\/strong> and is now called Muhanga<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I therefore assume that the journey must have taken a good three hours back then<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
