The budget … it is the nerve of war for a long journey. Very often the idea of budgeting for such adventures is far superior to what it actually is. I even read reviews about 100,000 euros / year .. wow … yes, possible by staying in very good hotels each day …..
I will not go into detail, just give orders of magnitude of some trips.
My African Tour: Motorcycle Tour of Africa (R100GS) – February 18, 2003 – June 1, 2004 – Approximately 50,000 km – global budget less than 30 000 euros
- Preparation: 16,500 €, which includes:
- Purchase of the motorcycle (5,000 euros)
- Preparation of the motorcycle (about 5 000 euros with the equipment)
- Purchase of equipment, vaccines, insurance, phone satellite, etc.
- « On the road » Budget, I don’t have the data anymore, but i think between 11 000 € and 14 000 € :
- Gasoline
- Visas,
- full service for motorcycle in Sul Africa (750 €) and shock Absorber (300 €)
- One month of scuba-diving in mozambique
- Renewal of my photographic equipment (1,500 €)
- One travel in France (650 $)
- The return ticket for my bike ($ 1,100) and me from Tanzania ($ 650)
Luc Cotterelle journey (www.le-grand-raid.com) – African Motorcycle Tour (R 1100 GS) – 12 February 2012 – 14 September 2014 – 87 800 kms – Global Budget of 30 000 €
- Preparation: around 10,000 € (6000 € Touratech for prepa moto + boots / 600 helmet / 600 jacket and about 2,800 for the rest: tent, fluff, gopro, pharmacy, vaccine, etc ….)
- « On the road » Budget: About 20 000 € over 29 months: 690 € / month
- 6,000 € gasoline
- 2,000 € Parts (2 x 500 € / front wheel / shock Absorber and cushion used in South Africa …)
- 1,300 € Visas
- 1,200 € Boat (800 between Israel and Greece and 400 roundtrip Dar Es Salam and Madagascar)
- 1,000 € Doctor (urologist in South Africa during non-insurance period … between the end of the 1st year and the start-up insurance CFE (French fund abroad)
- 1,000 € CFE insurance over the last 14 months
- 1,500 € of “holidays” (lodge parks and restaurants in South Africa at my friends …) over 2 months …
- Either the rest (6,000 €) for living expenses during the trip: 6,000 € / 29 months ie about 200 € / month …
Next trip – Motorbike R100 GS – March 2018 – …? – Asia – Global budget: 19,000 euros for one year.
- Preparation : 7 600 € (The bike is almost ready, but my old equipment is out of use)
- 2,400 € bike equipment
- 1,500 € luggage motorcycle & spare parts
- 1,700 € camping equipment (tent, water filter, stove, …)
- 2,000 € photos & multimedia equipment, orientation, tracking system, etc.
- « On the road » budget : overall estimate of 900 € / month.

For a 4×4 trip – two people – two years and 70,000 kilometers to Kamchatka (25 countries crossed) the total budget was 28,000 euros or 1,160 euros per month
Including two boat trips: Vladivostok-Petropavlosk (2,500 euros AR) and Valdivostok-Sakaminato in Japan (2,300 euros AR)
The preparation of the car is not included in this budget but all the oil changes and repairs are in addition to visas, financial expenses, food and fuel which represents half (ie 600 € / month of fuel – vehicle Which makes the 12/13 l per 100 km)
Over two years, barely a dozen hotel nights. The rest is either couch-surfing or in the car
