Don’t forget to take a risk today !

Hubert!

I already did a little post about him when he passed away in January 2018. But I feel I should remind you of his story today.

The first time I heard of him was in a documentary made by a motorcyclist-videographer-traveler, Fabrice Marquat. Marquat had travelled part of South America by motorcycle and made a lovely documentary – Yamana, retour en Patagonie – in which he profiled some of the people he met, including Hubert.

Hubert was a Franco-American who traveled by sidecar. His adventure began in a restaurant on Manhattan Island, where he had dined with a friend.
As they were enjoying a cucumber salad, his friend remarked, “When you live in big cities like New York, you turn out your pockets on December 31 and they’re empty because you spend everything you earn!”

A little later in the meal, they were at Couscous, he asked a question that would change Hubert’s life:
“Now that your youngest daughter, Jessica, is going to finish university, what are you going to do?”

They then calculated that by selling everything, Hubert could hope to travel for at least 10 years.

Hubert made his decision over dessert, a crème brulée, and on February 16, 2005, at 6:04 a.m., he left New York for good on his Side-Car.

He traveled the world for 13 years, succumbing to cardiac arrest while with his family on January 24, 2018.

His motto was, “Have you thought about taking a risk today?”

The photo illustrating this post was taken during one of his bivouacs on then-frozen Lake Baikal.

His website, as it looked on the day he died is here
