A new series in which I’ll share a few tips on the practical aspects of travelling.
In this first episode, I’m looking at the issue of motorcycle gear when travelling in Africa.
My boots: Dainese Centauri Gore-Tex — motorcycle touring boots.
Verdict: Comfortable for everyday use, good overall quality, although I had to have the soles stitched and glued back on after a year of use.
Recommendation: +++
My trousers: BMW motorcycle jeans
Verdict: Excellent quality. A little too warm for Africa. The zipped pocket on the thigh is a real plus. They now have almost four years of travelling behind them and are reaching the end of their life.
Recommendation for travelling: +++
My jackets:
In Central and South Asia: BMW Rally
Verdict: Excellent ergonomics and excellent quality. Plenty of pockets and very good ventilation.
Recommendation for travelling: ++++
On this trip through Africa:
Initially: Dainese Desert
Not really suitable for long-distance travel. For example, there is no external zipped pocket. And above all, it is too hot for Africa.
Recommendation for travelling: NO
Current setup: a simple roost guard/body protector
Advantages: Perfect for dirt tracks and not too hot.
Disadvantages: No pockets at all, and insufficient protection on paved roads.
Recommendation for travelling in Africa: ++
My helmets on this trip:
AGV Tour Modular
Advantages: Excellent visibility, lightweight, comfortable, easy to put on and take off.
Disadvantages: Ergonomics could be improved. No sun visor, which makes late-afternoon rides towards the west difficult.
Recommendation for travelling: +
Schuberth E2
Advantages: Excellent quality, very good overall ergonomics, good protection from the sun while riding. Easy-to-use integrated intercom. Comfortable.
Disadvantages: Peripheral vision could be better. The system locking the chin bar in the raised position needs improvement.
Recommendation for travelling: +++
My gloves:
Klim Mojave Pro 2023 Cool
Verdict: Worn out after four months of use because of perspiration: the stitching around the fingers gave way and the leather was breaking down.
Recommendation for travelling in Africa: NO
Current gloves: cheap Chinese gloves bought in Abidjan for €15… And they do the job perfectly!
Recommendation: +++
