Between Two Cultures: Three Lives
I think I’ve finally found the way I want to tell the story of this journey.
Talking to the camera? Plenty of people do that much better than I ever will. Besides, it’s just not really my thing.
Making real documentaries? That’s a dream of mine. But I’m not there yet. I still have a long road ahead and a lot to learn. (By the way, if you’re interested in documentary filmmaking, I highly recommend the YouTube channel Les Artisans de Demain.)
What I do enjoy is sitting down with people—and, more importantly, listening to them. People who’ve lived extraordinary lives, whose journeys have taken unexpected turns.
This idea has been quietly growing in my mind for quite a while. So today, I’m launching a new series:
The Saltimbanque Conversations – Extraordinary Lives from the Ends of the Earth
The idea is simple: meet the women and men I cross paths with on the road, let them tell their own stories, and share those stories with you.
I’ve already made a few attempts—three in Senegal and two in Abidjan. Four of them ended up being audio-only. The last one was cut short when my camera battery died halfway through the interview.
This time, I nearly had another disaster. Out of my three cameras, I lost all the footage from one of them. And with four people around the table but only two lavalier microphones, I had to improvise and make the best of what I had. Buying a couple more microphones has definitely moved to the top of my list.
But this time, I made it. The edit is finally finished.
Be kind—it’s my very first attempt, and it’s far from perfect.
